A Lifestyle of Worship
Posted April 30th, 2010 by David DeGarmoScripture
Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, “How glorious was the king of Israel today, uncovering himself today in the eyes of the maids of his servants, as one of the base fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!” So David said to Michal, “It was before the LORD, who chose me instead of your father and all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the LORD, over Israel. Therefore I will play music before the LORD. And I will be even more undignified than this, and will be humble in my own sight. But as for the maidservants of whom you have spoken, by them I will be held in honor.” – 2 Samuel 6:20-22
Observation
In the early years of David’s reign as king of Israel, he brought the Ark of the Covenant into his capital city in order to be able to worship in the presence of God and seek His guidance and favor. This was in contrast to how Israel as a nation had existed under previous leadership. Since inhabiting the Promised Land under the leadership of Joshua, they had only periodically gathered to worship and seek God’s direction, but David’s intention was to establish this practice as a precedent for how they would live. As the Ark was carried into the city, David led the people in abandoned worship. His only care was to worship God with all his might, with no regard to how his zeal and fervor was perceived by those around him.
Application
When we think of worship we typically think of a corporate gathering with music, teaching. and prayer. And while this story of David’s worship is in the context of a corporate gathering, it is a clear picture of what our attitude should be towards living in a lifestyle of worship. You see, as Christians, every thing we do and say should be a declaration of the greatness and goodness of our loving heavenly Father. Our lives should speak to the world around us of forgiveness, grace, and hope. But so often we desire the approval of people and fear their reaction to our commitment to the Lord, so we compromise or hold back from honoring and giving glory to God for our lives. Proverbs 29:25 says, “The fear of man brings a snare, But whoever trusts in the LORD shall be safe.” Let your life constantly speak, sometimes as a whisper, sometimes as a shout, of the goodness of God, of His favor, love, and mercy in your Life! They are looking for Him… let them see Him through you today!
Prayer
Father, give us the courage to let our lives be a constant stream of worship to You today. Let those around us see our lives as a reflection of You as we worship with abandon. In Jesus’ name…
