Scripture

Then it came about afterwards that David inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I go up to one of the cities of Judah?” And the LORD said to him, “Go up ” So David said, “Where shall I go up?” And He said, “To Hebron.” – 2 Samuel 2:1

Observation

David was anointed King of Israel by the prophet Samuel as a young man. He had fought Goliath and prevailed. He had served Saul faithfully in spite of Saul’s suspicion of him and in spite of Saul’s attempts to kill him. It is very likely that there were days when David questioned whether he would ever take the throne of Israel. Now Saul and his sons had died in a battle with the Philistines and it seemed apparent that his moment had come. Instead of presumptuously barreling ahead into what appeared to be an obvious transition, we see David pause to ask God for His direction. David never seemed to assume that he knew intuitively what the right move was at a critical decision point. He asked God for clear direction and then made his move.

Application

The more we mature and learn how to handle our responsibilities in life, the easier it is to become dependent on our own skill to bring success. It is important for us to remain dependant on the One Who promised to lead us step by step in the significant decisions that we face. God’s greatest desire is to keep us close to Him where we daily hear His voice gently guiding us along our path. It is in the place of daily intimacy with Him, daily walking with Him that He speaks to us and directs us into His plan and provision step by step.

Prayer

Jesus, thank You that You are my Shepherd and that You promised to lead me by Your Holy Spirit and by Your word. Help me to depend on You daily and even moment by moment as I navigate the important decisions of my life. I want to allow you to lead me daily, step by step. Thank you God! Amen.
