The Cross: the Ultimate Paradox

Scripture

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. – 1Corinthians 1:18

Observation

As Paul begins his letter to the church at Corinth, he describes what is very likely the greatest paradox in human thinking; the life-giving sacrificial work of Jesus at the Cross. He says in this passage that the message contained in the Cross of Jesus sounds like foolishness to those who are perishing. How can a brutally beaten and tortured dead Man possibly help me in my hopeless, sinful condition? It makes no sense to the natural mind. However, to those who have been drawn by the Holy Spirit into redemption and regeneration, who’s lives have been forever transformed by the merciful love of God, it is the Power of God that has resulted in salvation.

Application

Often, as well meaning Christians, we can become frustrated when we try to share the love of God with unbelieving friends and family because they just don’t seem to “get it.” It is so real to us, yet for some reason, there is sometimes a disconnect when we try to explain it to others. That’s because the message of the Cross is a spiritual message that must be communicated first to the heart, not the head. Only the Holy Spirit can do that work. As we seek to share our faith with others, we must first pray for them, that the Holy Spirit would do what only He can do: prepare the heart to receive the message of salvation in the Cross. It has to be received in the heart before it can fully make sense to the mind.

Prayer

Father, give me Your heart today, to share the hope of the Cross with others. Give me patience when they don’t respond immediately, and faith to believe that You are working their hearts as I have prayed.
