Walking Out Love

Scripture

Now I ask you, not as though I were writing to you a new commandment, but the one which we have had from the beginning, that we love one another. And this love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, that you walk in it. 2 John 5-6

Observation

One of the primary recurring themes in the Bible is the love of one another. This was not a New Testament command alone, but goes all the way back to Moses’ third book (Leviticus) in the Old Testament. The command to love one’s neighbor as yourself is so important that Jesus emphasized it continually in His teaching and by example, as did the disciples and the Apostle Paul. The difficulty is “walking in it,” meaning the practice of making it a part of our lives and seeing to it that the expression of it in our lives is as important to us as it is to God.

Application

We have the opportunity to show love in many ways: avoiding prejudice and discrimination, by accepting people for who they are, by listening attentively to people, by helping and giving of our time and resources to meet people’s needs. Knowing that God commanded us to love one another is not enough. It is an imperative to put it into practice, “walking in it (living it out)” according to His commandments.

Prayer

Father God, I ask that I may take Your commandment to heart, and make it a viable an active part of my life, loving others as You would have me to do, walking it out in action through commitment to follow the example of my Lord and Savior Jesus. Amen
